On a Friday evening during Lent, the parking runs out several blocks from 400 Cedar Ave and the line wraps around the building. That's not a complaint from reviewers, that's a badge of honor. The Allegheny Elks Lodge #339 has built a reputation in Pittsburgh's North Side that no marketing budget could manufacture: a $17 plate of fish that genuinely stops people in their tracks.

But the Lodge is more than one legendary night a week. Every Wednesday, the Banjo Club fills the hall with live string music, sing-along sheets in hand, and a dinner special that regulars plan their week around. The chicken salad croissant has been described as exquisite by first-timers who came skeptical and left converted. This is a place where the food is serious, the music is live, and the crowd is the kind that actually talks to each other.

Founded as part of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge #339 carries the fraternal organization's century-old commitment to community, charity, and fellowship. With a 4.7-star rating across 250 reviews, the numbers back up what Pittsburgh locals have known for years: this is the real thing.

What We Offer

The Friday Lenten fish fry is the anchor. For $17 you get a plate that reviewers consistently describe as enormous, well-prepared, and worth every minute of the wait. Sides, coleslaw, pierogies, the works. It draws crowds that fill every seat and spill into the parking situation, which tells you everything about how good it actually is.

Beyond Friday nights, Wednesday Banjo Club evenings offer live music, communal sing-alongs, and rotating dinner specials that punch well above typical bar food. The Lodge also hosts private events, member gatherings, and charitable functions throughout the year, keeping the hall active and the community connected.

Membership in the Elks opens access to the full calendar of events, member pricing at the bar, and the satisfaction of belonging to an organization that gives back to Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Whether you're a longtime Elk or a curious newcomer who heard about the fish fry, Lodge #339 has a seat for you.

"We came for Wednesday Banjo Club. Wow! The dinner special was chicken salad croissant and they were exquisite. The music was uplifting and really well performed. "Went to their fish fry last night. It was our first one ever! It was amazing!! We had to park several blocks away because of how crowded it was. And we waited for a table for about 45 mins…It was chilly. But we were so excited! And the whole experience did not disappoint!! From a band playing fun music to the amazingly large and fresh fish w/sides to the high energy to the really nice volunteers there…it was most definitely a memorable evening! And it won’t be our last!!"

"After being invited many times, I finally got out with some friends to try the Elks Pittsburgh famous Friday lenten fish fry. And overall, it definitely lived up to the hype. For $17, you get a huge fish sandwich and two generous sides. I went with Mac and Cheese and fries, and it was definitely a comfort food experience. The bar has very fair prices, and the staff run what is inherently a chaotic situation extremely well. Just get there early, or be ready to wait in line. Definitely worth a trip."
